Description

We’re two academics with kids, looking to rent our entire four-bedroom furnished house to another family wanting to be in NYC for the summer. The location is the historic district of Jackson Heights, one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the most diverse borough, Queens! Lively, friendly, leafy, and safe, Jackson Heights offers a true New York City experience. From the dosa restaurants of Little India to the pisco bars on Northern Boulevard, there’s a smorgasbord of excellent food and drink: tacos, arepas, momos, bibimbap, bubble tea, and more. 34th Ave, at the end of our block, is a pedestrian street where kids run freely on the way to the playgrounds at Travers Park, and it’s also the location of the weekly farmer’s market. The 7, E, and F trains connect the neighborhood to the rest of the city—in one direction it’s 15 minutes to Flushing Meadows Park (former World’s Fair site and now home to the Queens Museum and the Queens Night Market, not to be missed), and in the other direction it’s 20 minutes to midtown (and the NYPL research library) or 35 minutes to downtown (and NYU). We love our neighborhood; it’s convenient, it has gorgeous architecture, and it’s LGBTQ- and immigrant-friendly. Check out Frederick Wiseman’s acclaimed 2015 documentary, In Jackson Heights. Our three-story brick rowhouse was built in 1929 as part of an effort to draw Manhattanites to a more spacious and greener “garden community.” There’s a small front yard with flowers and herbs, and in the back there’s a patio with tall London plane trees, a table, a hammock, and even a treehouse, complete with a secret hatchway and rooftop lookout. The front door of the house leads into the living room, which has a working fireplace; the kitchen and dining room look out on the back yard. On the second floor are the large main bedroom and a kids’ room with bunk beds, plus the purple bathroom with original tile and a recently updated shower. Up the stairs again to the third floor and you’ll find the guest room (double bed plus pull-out sofa), the office (two desks), and another bathroom with classic black and white tiles, plus a skylight and lots of plants. In the basement, there’s a laundry room (washer and dryer), a workout space with a treadmill, and access to the one-car garage (there’s an additional parking spot outside). High-speed cable wifi and all utilities are included, as well as cleaning every other week. There are window air-conditioning units in each bedroom, although generally the house is shaded enough, and the walls are thick enough, that it stays cool inside, and there are three ceiling fans. There’s a Sonos sound system in four of the rooms, and several thousand books (mostly literature) around the house. No TV, sorry. When you’re not eating out or strolling to a taco truck, our kitchen is well equipped for cooking, espresso machine, air-fryer, Instant Pot, blender, etc.—everything you need to take advantage of the abundant local produce in the summer and the amazing range of spices and imported foods you’ll find in the markets. We’re looking to rent to one family (3-5 people, although a weekend guest or two is okay). We are taking our two cats with us, but if you need a dander-free house this might not be the rental for you, and we’d prefer not to have any other pets in the house. The available time period is June 28th to August 23rd—eight weeks—and the dates are a bit flexible on either end. We’d want to meet you by Zoom (or in person if possible) and we’d ask you to pay at least four week’s rent in advance. If you’re here the full eight weeks, the rent would be $750/week; for shorter periods we’d ask a bit more: $850/week for seven weeks, $950/week for six weeks, or $1050/week for five weeks, and $1150 for four weeks (the minimum).
